This Is My Story

Hi. My name is Paul Gudgeon. I grew up in the City of Sails, Auckland - New Zealand, renovated my first boat when I was in my young teens and have had a passionate connection to water ever since.
Way back in the 1990s, I made the move to Taupo, in the Central North Island, and this is where I picked up my first fly rod and have been exploring the local lakes and rivers ever since. Hence, my knowledge of local fly fishing waters is unparalleled and the art and sport of fly fishing has ever since grown on me and got me to start guiding people fly-fishing.

Over the last 30 years, my expertise in fly-fishing has been built and refined and I have come to share a deep passion for fly-fishing with the lesser-visited backcountry of New Zealand, taking every opportunity to do some heli fly-fishing, which gets you to fish the most amazing and remote areas of the New Zealand backcountry. It is here where fishing is a much bigger challenge than fishing the local rivers or even lakes, however, you get much more rewarded with some beautiful stunning backcountry scenery and bigger, more beautiful fish too!

Most recently I have turned my focus also towards guided hiking in the backcountry, taking out high-end clients on day-tramps, occasionally paired with fly-fishing. With my newly found passion for hunting, that I do as much as I can in my free time and which has got me a better understanding of the outdoors and its life, this has opened up more opportunities for creating exciting, unique, and more personalized guided trips and has also become a new source of energy for me.

A trip on the rivers in New Zealand's backcountry with me is destined to be a fun, memorable, and educational experience involving also information about the native animals,  flora, fauna, and geology that helps make New Zealand such a unique and interesting place to visit.

I am excited and look forward to sharing my passion and knowledge with you and create an experience for you, that you'll remember for a lifetime.
